Nude Reclining

There are some things he will never forget, images to hold in
his hand like smooth white stones.    When the night seems to 
stretch on forever, he reaches into his pocket and brings out 
one perfect memory.

He pictures her reaching for him across a rumpled bed, bleached white
linen falling away to reveal rosy-tipped breasts.  He remembers the way 
her skin looked, all pink and gold in the early morning sun, how she 
smiled up at him from beneath bright strands of hair.  There were no 
angles to her, only gentle curves of hip and shoulder and breast and belly.  
The light kissed her skin wherever it touched.

The sun-brushed surfaces are glorious, but the shadows intrigue him.
The bend of her arm, the curve under her breasts, the mysterious
dark places beneath the sheet, these are secrets that beg discovery. 
Sometimes, the sadness threatens to overwhelm him and remembers 
the light and shadow.
