People assume gravity is this great binding force, but
in freshman physics she learned how weak it truly is,
needing an entire planet to anchor us.  All the while,
the barest electrostatic attraction seals the whole
world of an atom together, even though the nucleus is
like a speck of dust on a football field.

Transmogrification.  Glass.

Seventeen: she dyes her hair black.  Antarctica is a
desert, and there are over 100,000 species of
butterflies. Last week was Biloxi and she saw one,
fluttering plumwine against the window before
storm-winds caught it away.

Why she stays:

1.  She's never let anyone bully her out of anything,
and at thirty-five, she's not about to start.

2.  The woods keep a phantom town hidden behind old
leaves and skeleton trees.  The car jounces over the
dirt road, wheels kicking up orange clay dust.  Even
though she doesn't believe in ghosts, she believes in
him.
