SUMMARY: An explanation.

	If he stays, they will be taken away.

	If he goes, he will lose her.

	He watches her sleep, the sleep of the trusting, of the beloved. He
thinks of her strong, faithful heart. He cannot break it a second
time.

	But his nightmares of full of her screaming in pain. Whenever he
holds the child he trembles with fear for his future.

	He must go. She will hate him at first but maybe she will come to
understand that he does this for her, for the child, and perhaps in
time she will even forgive. There is one other who loves her as much
as he, who will stand between the child and what's to come. He is
not leaving them helpless and alone.

	He kisses her lips and whispers into her ear the greatest gift he
has given her, until the blue-eyed boy asleep nearby: "Believe that
I love you. Believe that. Believe."
