In a safe house near Yellowknife, he sits by the window watching snow
fall, flakes of diamond glowing in the light of a blue moon.

He imagines them through the snowfall. Perhaps she got a letter today. She
wouldn't know how it reached her - he doesn't even know. Perhaps she found
it slipped between the pages of her library book, or in the grocery bag
with the baby rusks.

She'll read it and she won't cry. She'll read what he can't say in the
white spaces. She'll hold it to her face, smelling the clean, sharp scent
of the snow he can't tell her about.

He sits imagining them, his skin shivering with longing for them, and he
knows her so well it's as if he never left.

She sleeps with a gun under her pillow, and she tells William stories that
begin, "Once upon a blue moon, two people tried to save the world..."
