"Miracles Unquestioned" by Lisa haven599@msn.com Scully watched the steady rise and fall of his chest. It was the most wonderful sight in the world to her. Occasionally, she would lean over and check his pulse and respiration, fearing they might have stopped. She had not left his room in hours. After Doggett closed the door and backed out of the room, Mulder fell back to sleep and she eased herself into the chair. Everything was the way it should be now. Mulder was alive and right here next to her. Apparently, she had not used up her quota of miracles yet. With one hand braced on the handle of the chair and the other on her stomach, she got up slowly to stretch her legs. Her body was getting more uncomfortable by the week, but there had been no further complications with the baby. Everything was proceeding normally, which she was extremely grateful for. "It worked," Mulder commented, seeing her stomach for the first time. She looked back at the bed, a smile spreading slowly across her face. "Not exactly," she corrected. He looked puzzled so she continued: "I stopped the fertility treatments, Mulder. I never had anymore since that first attempt." "Then how did this happen?" he asked. She feared this would happen. He didn't remember. Was she really surprised there were gaps in his memory after all he'd been through? She swallowed back the tears, remembering those few nights they spent together. Why did they have to take the good memories from him? There were no words to explain to him how she felt the first time they made love. "It couldn't have happened one of those nights we were together, could it?" he asked. She came closer to him. "You remember?" "Of course I do," he said. "I'll always remember." She was touched by his words and felt the tears come to her eyes. "Mulder, I found out I was pregnant the day you were taken," she told him. "From then on, I've gone over many theories in my head, but have unable to come to a plausible reason for my pregnancy. So, I've decided not to question this miracle I was given. It's the only thing that's kept me grounded during these months." "When are you due?" "In about six weeks," she replied. "Have I been gone that long?" She nodded sadly. "There were some nights when I almost lost hope," she confessed to him. "I felt I'd never see you again." "Scully, C'mere." His voice was little more than a whisper. She wiped at her tears and moved beside him just as he struggled to move over in bed, making room for her. "Mulder, you need to rest. Don't -" He wasn't listening to her and after a few moments, she eased her body next to him. Mulder stroked her hair, seeing the tears glistening in her eyes. She leaned in to kiss him, feeling his lips on hers once again. It was wonderful to be close to him again and receive affection from a man she feared she'd never see again, much less kiss or touch. "Mulder, " she breathed, feeling his lips on her cheeks, her eyelids, and her face. Settling herself against his body, she laid her head in the crook of his neck, feeling the warm, soft skin she'd missed all these months. Her stomach was pressed against his body, allowing him to feel their child growing inside her for the very first time. She was truly blessed. Mulder's life was her second miracle. **** END (1/1) Like what you read? Come to Lisa's Haven: http://shannono.net/haven/
